Derived originally from Latin, Italian is a Romance language and of all Romance languages, its vocabulary is most closely related to classical Latin. During the 1600s, the first official Italian dictionary was published in the Tuscan dialect which is still considered the purest of Italian dialects. Napoleon’s occupation of Italy actually spread the use of the language and facilitated Italy’s later unification as clerks, government officials, the bourgeoisie and the nobility started using Italian. Following the unification of Italy in 1861, the countless regional dialects were standardized based on the Tuscan dialect from the region of Florence. Leaders felt at the time that this dialect was most reflective of Italy’s socio-economic and cultural heritage.
Almost 60 million people have Italian as their native language. They are primarily located in Italy, Switzerland and the tiny nations of San Marino and Vatican City. There are significant Italian language minorities in Croatia, Slovenia, France and Malta as well as in Libya, Eritrea and Somalia. The United States, Canada and Australia also have large numbers of Italian-speakers, many of whom speak both Standard Italian as well as regional dialects.
In both Canada and Australia, Italian is the second most spoken foreign language. In Latin America, Italian is the second most spoken language in Argentina, with 1.5 million native speakers. There are also smaller Italian-speaking communities in Uruguay, Brazil and Venezuela. In total, there are about 85 million Italian speakers in the world.
Apart from being recognized as an official language in Italy, Switzerland, San Marino and Vatican City, Italian is a recognized second official language in parts of Slovenia and Croatia. The European Union, the European Parliament and other EU institutions use Italian as an official language. Other international organizations using Italian as an official language include UNESCO and OSCE, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Vienna. Institutional demand for professional Italian translation services is significant.
