Translation Services and Universities of Montreal

With more than 1.6 million residents, Montreal is the biggest city in the province of Quebec, Canada. In this city, where French is the official language, a great number of students attend the various universities located there, including the two francophone ones.

One of them is the Université de Montréal (UdeM), founded in 1878. With approximately 300 research units, it is the biggest research university in the province, and one of the largest in the country. It has 13 faculties – Faculty of Medicine, Music, Education, Kinesiology, Arts and Sciences, which is one of the largest such faculties in Canada, etc. –, as well as two affiliated schools – the École Polytechnique and HEC Montréal. There are more than 55,000 students, of which over 5,000 are foreign students, making the University one of the most cosmopolitan universities in the country, and giving rise to a steady demand for translation services in Montreal.

The other French-language university is the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), established in 1969. It is one of the campuses of the Université du Québec; it is, indeed, the largest one. The University has six faculties – Faculty of Communications, Fine Arts, and Science, are some examples –, and a school of management. Its student population is about 41,000, but with the students from the Télé-université  – a component of the UQÀM – it is approximately 60,000, making it the biggest francophone university in the world. It annually welcomes more than 2,200 foreign students from around 80 countries, and has a language school where many languages such as Arabic, Spanish, Italian, and Russian are taught. This results in a significant demand for professional translation services in Montreal.

The city has other universities as one of the country’s leading research-intensive one, McGill University. Established in 1821, it is one of the oldest universities in Canada and the oldest one in Montreal. The student population, coming from around 160 countries, is over 34,000. The University has 11 faculties such as the Faculty of Medicine, Law, Science, Religious studies, 10 schools, as well as other academic units.

Concordia University, founded in 1974, is another major university in Montreal. With approximately 40,000 students, it is one of the biggest universities in the country. There are four faculties: Faculty of Arts and Science, Fine Arts, Engineering and Computer Science. This University is considered as one of the best Canadian engineering schools, and it also encompasses the John Molson School of Business.
