Translation Services and Universities of Calgary

As well as being the biggest city in the Province of Alberta, Canada, Calgary is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, along with Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver. Its population is more than 1 million, and there are a great number of visible minority groups – such as people from different European and Asian countries –, making the city one of the most diverse Canadian cities. Among them, students attending the various academic institutions based in Calgary are numerous.

One of the most important Calgarian post-secondary institutions includes the University of Calgary (or “U of C”). Established in 1966, the University is a research-intensive public university considered to be one of the best research universities in Canada. It has 17 faculties as well as over 30 research institutes and centres and more than 60 departments. Among the various faculties that offer over 100 programs, there are the Faculties of Communication and Culture, Environmental Design, Graduate Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences, etc. The Faculties of Kinesiology, Medicine, Law, and Veterinary Medicine – one of the best veterinary schools in Western Canada and in the country – as well as the Haskayne School of Business and the Schulich School of Engineering are recognized faculties of the University. The U of C also has a campus located in Doha, Qatar. The “University of Calgary-Qatar” (or “UCQ”) offers nursing degrees with the same standards and credentials as in Canada. The University has a student body of approximately 28,000, with more than 2,000 foreign students coming from around 100 countries. This has given rise to a steady demand for professional translation services in the city of Calgary. The U of C is one of the biggest employers in Calgary thanks to its staff of more than 5,000.

Calgary has other public comprehensive institutions such as Mount Royal College (or “MRC”) with about 12,000 students, a great number of faculties, schools and departments (the Faculties of Arts, Teaching and Learning, and the Integrative Health Institute at Mount Royal are some examples); SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology), which has a student population of more than 14,000, and different departments (like the School of Information and Communications Technologies, and the Centre for Instructional Technology and Development) as well as various programming areas such as construction, culinary arts, tourism, and transportation; and smaller institutions like Bow Valley College and the Alberta College of Art and Design.

The city is also home to private institutions like the Christian Ambrose University College, which has faculties of Arts & Science, and Theology, and St. Mary's University College, a Catholic institution focused on liberal arts and sciences teaching and research. Given this wide range of internationally focused educational institutions, specialized translation services are in high demand in Calgary.
