Translation Services in Sydney - Economic Profile

The city of Sydney with a population of about 26,000 people is located in the Province of Nova Scotia in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. It is the largest urban center on Cape Breton Island and is the center of the Industrial Cape Breton region.

Traditionally the city's economy has largely been based on the coal and steel industries. Since both industries were finally closed down in 2001, the provincial government has been fostering various economic sectors such as tourism, culture, manufacturing, and information technology.

Tourism is one of the major contributors to the city's economy. The city offers many cruise ship facilities; and the waterfront now featuring boardwalks and marinas has been revitalized. It is also host to one famous tourist attraction: the world's largest fiddle. More popular sites include Glace Bay Miners Museum, Alexander Graham Bell Museum, the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park and Bras d'Or Lake. In addition, the fall foliage draws countless national and international visitors each year.

The city's port, although being underutilized at the moment, holds potential as a logistics base for future offshore petroleum and natural gas exploration in the Laurentian Basin.

Sydney is also home to several institutions of higher education including Cape Breton University and Nova Scotia Community College.

Sydney features a diverse ethnic makeup and has become home to immigrants from all over the world. The most prevalent communities include Scots, Acadians, African Canadians and Eastern Europeans. All of these international communities contribute actively to the city's cultural life with many international festivals being held throughout the year.

All these aspects have created a significant demand for translation and interpreting services in the city of Sydney.
