Sault Ste. Marie has a population of about 80,000 residents in the metropolitan area and is the third largest city in Northern Ontario. It is located on the St. Mary’s River in Ontario and connected to the United States city of Sault Ste. Marie by the International Bridge.

Sault Ste.Marie is home to several prestigious institutions of higher education including Sault College, a college of applied arts and technology, and to Algoma University College which is affiliated with Laurentian University in Sudbury.

The city's ethnic makeup has been shaped by a strong influx of Italian immigrants. 91.6% of the population is of European origin including Italians, French, English, and Scandinavians. Aboriginals make up about 7.8% of the population while the remainder of the population is Chinese, Black, and Filipino.
