Translation Services in Saint John - Economic Profile

With a population about 122,400 people in the metropolitan area Saint John is the largest city in the province of New Brunswick. It is located on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy at the mouth of the Saint John River.

The city has a vibrant and diverse economy and is considered the industrial powerhouse of the Maritimes. The region features the greatest concentration of industry at the Atlantic Coast north of New York City.

The most important employer in the region is the industrial conglomerate of K.C. Irving with oil, forestry, shipbuilding, media and transportation businesses. In addition, Saint John is home to North America's first deepwater oil terminal, a pulp mill, a newsprint mill and a tissue paper plant. Other major companies and employers in Saint John include Moosehead Brewery, the Port of Saint John, Saint John Regional Hospital, various call centers, and New Brunswick Power Corporation, which operates three electrical plants including Point Lepreau Nuclear Power Station. In addition, Canaport LNG, co-operation between Irving Oil and Repsol YPF, has been constructing a huge regasification terminal in the city which will begin operations in late 2008.

The city of Saint John offers a vibrant cultural scene and plays host to several events and festivals such as the Festival by the Sea, Saint John Shakespeare Festival and Canada Day Celebrations. In addition, there are numerous museums and cultural institutions including the New Brunswick Museum, Saint John Arts Center, City of Saint John Gallery, Trinity Galleries, Peter Buckland Gallery and many more.

Higher education in Saint John is provided by The University of New Brunswick and New Brunswick Community College.

The city has a diverse ethnical makeup featuring significant Irish, Scottish, French, German, North American Indian, Dutch, and Welsh communities.
