Translation Services in Regina – Economic Profile

Nicknamed "The Queen City", Regina is the capital of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. This city is a cultural and commercial metropolis for both southern Saskatchewan and adjacent areas in the neighbouring American states of North Dakota and Montana.Tourism is an important economic factor in this region. Regina is a popular destination for many visitors due to the vitality of its business, cultural and entertainment scene. The city's agricultural exhibition, called the "Buffalo Days Exhibition", is usually held in early August and a popular tourist attraction for Regina.Like many other capital cities in Canada, the Saskatchewan provincial government plays a significant role in Regina’s economy. In addition, the city and its area’s economy rely heavily on natural resources, due to the plentiful deposits of oil and natural gas, potash, kaolin, sodium sulphite and bentonite. Farm and agricultural equipment is still a significant part of the local economy. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, "the world's largest grain-handling co-operative", is headquartered in Regina. The modern shipping and transport industry is also contributing to the city’s economic development. All these international business activities result in a significant demand for language services.Regina is home to the University of Regina, and several post secondary institutions. Campion College and Luther College have federated college status in the University of Regina, as does the First Nations University of Canada. The city is proud to be the site of The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy, a national institution which is now also a major visitor attraction in the city.According to recent demographic reports, Regina has a population of almost 180,000 residents and attracts a relatively high proportion of international immigrants coming to Saskatchewan. The make-up of the immigrant population is changing. In the past decade, most of the immigrants to the city were from the UK and USA. However, recently an increasing number of immigrants from Mexico, El Salvador, and the Philippines as well as from several European countries including Greece, Italy, and the former Yugoslavia started their lives in Regina. The presence of different ethnic groups presents increasing opportunities for linguistic services, cross-cultural communication and ethnic marketing.
