Translation Services in Gatineau – Economic Profile

The city of Gatineau with a population of about 242,000 people is located in the province of Quebec on the northern bank of the Ottawa River, just across from the capital Ottawa. Together with Ottawa, Gatineau comprises a single census metropolitan area.

The city's economy developed through forestry and agriculture, but has since undergone major changes. Over the past 15 years, the federal government has created ministries, agencies and jobs opportunities on both sides of the Ottawa River which led to a massive construction boom in the city of Gatineau.

Today, the most important economic sectors include high technology, manufacturing and construction industries, finance and real estate services, health services and education as well as agriculture and resource-based industries. The city's most important employers are the Government of Canada, Centre Hospitalier des Vallées-de-l'Outaoais (hospital), the City of Gatineau, the Government of Québec, the School Board, the Casino du Lac-Leamy, Bell Canada, Bowater, Hydro Québec, HP, Scott Paper, and many more.

The city offers visitors a vibrant cultural life and many attractions such as the popular Casino du Lac Leamy and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. In September, Gatineau plays host to the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival.

In addition, there are numerous parks, including Lac Beauchamp Park and Jacques Cartier Park which is the venue for the famous Winterlude Festival attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Gatineau has a small municipal airport which handles national and international flights. In addition, Ottawa McDonald Cartier International Airport is nearby.

Higher education in Gatineau is provided by a Université de Québec campus, the Université du Québec en Outaouais, a campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and several Anglophone and Francophone Heritage Colleges.

Gatineau is a bilingual city and features a diverse ethnic makeup. About 80% of its population is Francophone, while about 13% have English as their mother tongue. Further languages spoken are Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Serbo-Croatian, Romanian, German, Vietnamese, Polish, and many more. There are also significant Black and Native Canadian communities.

All these aspects have created a huge demand for translation and interpreting services in the bilingual city of Gatineau.
